Local history as a cultural project: "Salem, Semey!" book launched

A presentation of the illustrated family guide "Сәлем, Семей!" (Hello, Semey!) took place in Semey — the fourth book in a series about Kazakhstan's cities and nature. The publication introduces children and adults to the city through local stories, rare facts, and visual imagery collected by residents themselves.

The book draws from materials by the local history community "Priirtyshye" and data shared by engaged locals. It spotlights the city's cultural layers, urban discoveries, and milestones—like Semey hosting Kazakhstan's first-ever football match on modern territory.

Published by children's publisher Tentek Publishing House with support from EA Charity Fund and Meloman Publishing.

"We're delighted our fund supported this book. We prioritize initiatives that create lasting cultural value. Here, the book becomes more than a publication — it's a spark for intergenerational dialogue between the city and its people.", — Aidar Buribaev, Director of EA Charity Fund

The guide's artistic language shines through illustrations by Anastasia Kuhturtseva, a Semey native and graduate of the Nevzorov Family Museum's art studio. The visuals stand alone, storytelling via architecture, urban details, and the city's atmosphere rather than literal depictions.

"Our 'Hello!' series holds a special place in our hearts. We're thrilled the latest, backed by EA Charity Fund, spotlights Semey. Every book features only Kazakhstani specialists. We invite local creators as authors and illustrators.

Shoutout to journalist Ruslan Shakabaev for his city story, and Marat Sasanov for fact-checking ours. I hope it'll engage Semey residents and all Kazakhstanis." — Malika Kohan, Chief Editor of Tentek Publishing House.

The launch occurred in a historic 1890s mill building, now home to Pana Unique Semey guesthouse and Tary ethno-café. This venue extended the book's theme: a conversation between the city's past and its vibrant present.

Available in Kazakh and Russian via Meloman stores in Astana, Almaty, Semey, and East Kazakhstan, plus museums and marketplaces. Copies were donated to the city library.
